At the same time, Ollie is running into the building, yelling Makani’s name to warn her—meaning the killer is not Ollie. That's right, the gimmick isn't even the gimmick. Also, the unspoken rule that the first two kills establish -- that the local bogeyman is going after people who are secretly bad people -- gets entirely demolished by the third kill when the target is a decent person.

Admittedly, There's Someone Inside Your House is a good title for a film looking to play around with tropes and get a bit winky and clever with set pieces. But what we get is a flat, muddled mess that fails because it just wants to have everything. It wants to have someone run through a house, but also a church.

The killer gives Makani the knife before Ollie and Makani's friends arrive and save Caleb. Makani then realizes that the killer is headed for the corn maze. So the film is actively trying to be about things, and is not a meta-celebration of itself and its genre — and is therefore novel. At the same time, it adheres to many slasher tropes, and leads to a noisy conclusion in which the villain spends a lot of time talking when he/she/it should be killing, and isn’t that always the villain’s tragic hubristic downfall? I shrug in the general direction of the ending, but the rest of it generates enough narrative traction to maintain our interest. And for those of you who are here for the kills, well, the kills are damn killy, and even if they’re not innovative — knife meets body; repeat — for people who want kills, the movie is better than one without kills at all.

There's Someone Inside Your House is a teen slasher flick that hit Netflix just in time for blood-thirsty Halloween viewers. But when students start getting murdered, exposing the teens' darkest secrets, the whole town of Osborne is on edge. The Walking Dead's Sydney Park stars as Makani, a girl who's recently moved to town, escaping a recent, tragic event who, like everyone else, becomes the target of this masked assailant because... Again though, Makani, and her band of outcast friends, are apparently just as vulnerable as the killer's first two victims, who are a nasty prejudiced people. And all the while the film plays the Red Herring shell game to the point where the killer really can't be anyone except the one person that doesn't make any damn sense. At the end of the film, Makani, Ollie, and their friends head to the school's fall festival to try to thwart the killer, who they realize is going to strike there next.

Yes, we had a couple other scenes that we ended up reshooting as well — scenes that Netflix was very specific about — so we were thankful for it. It meant that Netflix was on board and wanted us to put our best foot forward. They flew us out to Vancouver again, which was amazing. It was so weird, too, because we had to quarantine for two weeks, but the rewrites made sense. He took Netflix’s notes and was like, “Okay, here’s what we’re going to do. This is so much better.” And I think it worked out.

I was like, “Fuck, am I going to seem unprofessional if I tell them that I showed up hungover? ” (Laughs.) And so I went to this crazy studio so far out; it’s like an hour away. So I was around all of these weird scans, and I was like, “Guys, I’m feeling like shit.” So they had a banana and a coffee mug for me. We’re going to get your face.” So everybody got 3D scanned, and then our special effects and makeup departments ended up making multiples of each character’s mask. There was one that was specifically for camera so it looked super, super close to the character, and then another one was for our stunt performers in case the mask broke or fell off during a stunt.

I would be so worried about tipping my hand, inadvertently, in an earlier scene. The movie is a bit melancholy, distant and pensive like her, and the tonal/character change at the very, very end seems to support this theory as well. Maybe this is a product of the movie’s nature as an adaptation, but there’s never really a moment in “There’s Someone Inside Your House” that suggests its protagonists are real enough to be worth rooting for.

Like other thrilling slashers, "There's Someone Inside Your House" follows Sydney as she and her surviving friends try to piece together the mystery before it's too late.
